You… are a rockstar at what you do. But then again, why wouldn’t you be?
You graduated at the top of your high school class and always knew what you wanted to study in college. It took a semester or two of having just a bit too much fun to get serious but you still graduated with ease, and magna cum laude at that. You immediately connected with the recruiters and got the best internships and a killer first job. Even though you thought some of the corporate bigwigs were a little too out of touch and phony for your taste, you wanted to climb the ladder, and you did.
Wait, wait… I know, that’s not you but you are still a rockstar, right?
Nothing was given to you or even came easily but you’ve done pretty well for yourself. Whether it was school, mastering your tradecraft, building with your hands, or building your business, you’ve always put in the hard work, done the grind, and overcome obstacles others couldn’t even imagine. You’ve gotten to where you are today by creating your own luck, which you know if found precisely at the intersection of preparation and opportunity. It hasn’t been easy but you’ve done well.
What… still not you? Ok, I get it. You did it differently but, you still did it, and you’re still a rockstar.
Well, I can’t know everybody’s story but I do know how talented you are, how hard you’ve worked to get where you are, and how much untapped potential you have for the future. You really have been a great contributor, leader, and deserving of the accolades that others send your way.
There’s just one thing… it’s not a big thing, I mean you can keep being you, but it is a thing.
You need to do something else. You can still be you, but you’ll need to consider making some changes.
You’ve always known just what to wear and how to wear it, but I’m sorry to say, your suits and j buckle shoes, or perfectly faded jeans and untucked button down aren’t really going to look right around here.
And, even though you…
- developed a killer book of business,
- won a patent for a new lifesaving drug,
- know everything there is to know about matrix leadership,
- had a successful IPO,
- did a heart transplant,
- were named top realtor in the nation,
- [insert your accomplishment here]….
…that’s not an option for you anymore. But you knew this day would come going in… and all along… and it was worth it.
Yet, here you are.
The good news is everybody will know all you’ve accomplished. Well, sort of…. They will think you’re cool, but you should probably practice telling them anything you think it’s important for them to know…. and expect it to take a few times for them to get it.
You may also want to give some thought to what you’d like to do next. I mean your skills, they’re cool and all, but I mean have you read the job descriptions? You understand it’s going to take a little time… right?
Great.
